"To garden is to elide the past, present and future; it is a defiance of time..." - Penelope Lively, Life in Gardens

My work investigates the concept of the garden. Through the use of drawing, printmaking and painting, I attempt to recreate the restorative properties that nature has on humanity and the individual. As nature and gardening can be a soothing experience, so too can be said of my praxis. Its repetitive and meditative manner of execution becomes evident in its many shades, tonalities and contours that constitute the making of my work.

Inspired by my family's home garden, I am interested in the concepts of home, location, settlement, memory and belonging. The garden furthermore facilitates a form of escapism for me. In my work, I attempt to explore the awe and wonder that the garden can evoke; it is complex in its structure and constantly changing and shifting.

My work speaks of entanglement, attachment and interconnectedness. It is in my foliagescapes*  that I attempt to capture a single moment in time, through the nostalgic use of charcoal, the permanence of print, and the fluidity of paint. My work seeks to evoke imagination for the viewer, whilst inviting a sense of immersion, wonder and awe; an invitation to 'a more pleasant time', intertwined in the structures and shapes of garden foliage and plants.

*A term I have come to describe my work. It is adapted from the terminology of landscape (and even seascape). The original spelling was "landschap", which denoted the "shaping of land". While the majority of the work definitely doesn't fall under the genre of landscape, I regard them as foliagescapes - the shaping or forming of plants.
